This monthly program's purpose is
to encourage people of all ages to research the exciting
past history of their families. People new to genealogy
will be helped with resources for obtaining past records
and suggestions on how to approach family members for

you in breaking down the walls or barriers to your ancestors.

TAEKWONDO
Our Structured program is designed to bring out the best
in your child. We teach children how to build self-esteem,
develop confidence and improve discipline. By enrolling

concentration, coordination and fitness. These skills

and life. Our professional instructors are skilled
in bringing out the best in each and every child we

TAX PLANNING
Now that it is time to prepare for
the “Tax Man”,
why not have a plan for 2004. In this course we will
explore the different tax planning ideas, i.e. IRA’s,

such as tax-free bonds and annuities. All of your questions
will be answered and you are entitled to a free financial

DOG OBEDIENCE
CLASSES
This class teaches your dog to
without pulling, sit and stay, come when called, not
to jump, and basic house manners. Learn about proper
nutrition and health issues also. Classes instructed
by Devil Dog Training. Dog handlers must be 18 years
of age or older. Dogs must be at least 4 months old
and proof of vaccinations required. 6-foot lease required.
No retractable leashes allowed. A $10 collar fee is
due on the first night of class. This is a great way
to socialize your dog and have them learn too! Classes
will be held at the Senior Center, Mass. Ave and Ambler
Road. This six-week class meets on Monday from 6:30 – 7:30

This one-night seminar will meet three different times
through out the spring program: Monday, February 23,
Tuesday, April 27, and Wednesday, June 2. Sign up for
any of these three dates. This workshop will include:
How to pick colleges that will give the best financial
aid packages, how parent ands student earnings and
assets will count against them, how to fill out the
many complicated financial aid forms accurately and
on time, and much more. This seminar is offer free

MARDI GRAS LUNCHEON – Tuesday,
February 24
It isn’t New Orleans but it as close as we are
going to get here in Somers Point. One March 4 at 12
noon at Felicity’s on Bay and New Jersey Ave. will
host a senior citizens’ luncheon. Come out and
have a good time on this commemoration of Fat Tuesday.
Please let us know your entrée choice at the time
of registration. Choices include Filet Tip Sandwich,
Maryland Crab Cake or Stuffed Shrimp

POWER YOGA
POWER YOGA combines posture flows, breathe and mindfulness
to create an energizing, purifying and strengthening
yoga practice. Integrating mind, body and spirit POWER

BALLROOM DANCING
Both couples and singles are invited to come out for
this 8-week course in ballroom dancing. You will learn

OPERA APPRECIATION
This course will give a history
of opera from beginning to present day. In addition 4
of the most loved and often performed operas will be
overviewed. The 4 operas include the melodious “La Boheme”, the
thrilling “Carmen”, the spectacular “Aida” and
the dramatic “Tosca” . Highlights of each
opera will be viewed on video with sub-titles. The
background of each opera and composer will also be
discussed. Ralph Valeri who had been studying and attending
operas for over 40 years will teach the course. He
was guild director of opera classics of New Jersey,
a fully professional opera company and he is currently
associated with Opera Verissimo in Hackensack, NJ.
No formal knowledge of music is necessary to enjoy
this course. The only prerequisite is a love of theatre,
drama and good music. Class meets on Thursdays. Class
starts on February 26

MORE OPERA APPRECIATION
The fist opera we will review is
Verdi’s Don Carlo,
with favorites Domingo and Freni and the great bass Nicolai
Ghiaurov. At the request of many, for the first time
we will be doing a Russian opera: Tchaikovsky’s
Eugene Onegin. This will be followed by Rossini’s
delightful comic opera, L’Italiana in Algeri (This
is Ralph’s favorite comic opera). Puccini’s
bittersweet La Rondine will be the fourth presentation.
Our final work will be Boito’s masterpiece Mefestophole
and Samuel Ramey will overpower you with his singing
of the title role, which has been called “the most
difficult and cruelest role written for a bass. This
class will meet on Tuesdays as follows: Feb. 24, March
2, 9. 16, and 23.

Dealing with Difficult People - Thursday, March 4
Develop a new approach in your
communication style with difficult people at work,
school or home. This workshop will focus on improving
ways to address and find solutions to stressful daily
interactions. Everyone will leave with at least five

This event has expanded to four
days. A Thursday night free concert will be offer at
Calvary Bible Church on 9th St. and New York Ave from
7-10 p.m. featuring the Clifford Buggs Quartet. The Friday
night’s line
up includes the NYC based Rick Parker Collective at The
Pearl on the Circle, along with Lou Lanza Quartet at
Gregory’s on Delaware Ave. Also on Friday pianist
Brian Trainor Quartet featuring Steve Marcus on saxophone
will appear at Mac’s Restaurant. On Saturday, we
will once again be offering free jazz workshop to local
and area students at chARTer TECH High School from 10
a.m. till 12 noon. Additionally starting at 12:30 local
high school jazz bands will perform followed by the Rowan
University Big Band. Saturday evening will find the Gina
Roche’. Quartet at The Pearl, The George Genna
Quartet at Gregory’s and The Marlon Simon Quintet
at Mac’s Restaurant. On Sunday we will be hosting
a free afternoon concert featuring the Johnny Andrews
Quartet featuring Lois Smith on vocals will be at Gregory’s.

Somers Point Senior Center at 9:30 for your trip up
the Parkway. The fun starts at 11:30 and we should

Elder law is concerned with legal issues that affect
senior citizens. In this course, you will learn about:

TAI CHI - March 22
Tai Chi is a form of Chinese exercise that uses slow,
graceful movements to increase range of motion, strength,
coordination and flexibility. It is often referred
to as a moving meditation. It has been shown to decrease
blood pressure and tension, while increasing concentration
and energy. The class will be an introduction to the
form, with focus on various postures, and will also
include Chi Kung breathing exercises. Suitable for
adults and seniors alike. Karen Barlow, Instructor

Participants will learn the basic stick skills of field
hockey, positioning, roles and strategies. Equipment
will be supplied for use during clinic. Each participant

students in grades 5th, 6th, or 7th. Program will start

EASTER & SPRING BASKET MAKING – Saturday,

This program is for both the Senior and Non-Senior craft enthusiast.
This class will meet from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Senior Center.
You will in this short time create a lovely Easter basket with
all the frills upon it. Cost includes materials. A perfect
craft to do with that special child or grandchild.

Genealogy Research - Mondays, Jan. 26,

This monthly program's purpose is
to encourage people of all ages to research the exciting
past history of their families. People new to genealogy
will be helped with resources for obtaining past records
and suggestions on how to approach family members for
information. Instructor, Bill Fehlinger, will assist
you in breaking down the walls or barriers to your ancestors.

DAY CAMP SIGN UPS
Don’t forget Day Camp Sign Ups
will be on April 28 and April 29 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.
and from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Community Education and
Recreation Office Jordan Road School Day Camp will start
on July 5 and run until August 13. Space is limited. Day
Camp is for children going into 1st through 7th grades.
The Camp for 1st through 3rd grades will be held at Dawes
Avenue School and the Camp for 4th through 7th grades will
be held at Jordan Road School. Registration will not be
accepted prior to dates and times listed above. Non-resident
registration will not be accepted prior to June 1, 2003.

SPRINGTIME TENNIS
Clay Smith will once again be offering tennis lessons to those students from
grades four to seven. Classes will be held from 3:30-4:30 twice a week on both
Tuesday and Wednesday at the Municipal Courts at Kern Field starting on April
27. This is a six-week program. Students will be taught the basics of the game
including the different strokes and scoring that goes with tennis. Through
games, drills, and practice students will develop a beginning knowledge of
how the game is played. No experience is necessary and all ability levels are
welcome. This class is limited to fifteen participants.

Municipal Courts 6 Weeks
CHESS
Designed for the beginner or intermediate player in grades
5-8. Class meets on Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m. Chess is
a challenging and fun activity. Come out and learn a
little more about the ins and outs of this fascinating
game.

Intermediate Library 6 Weeks
BEGINNER GUITAR
So many popular songs can be played
by learning just 3 or 4 chords! This class will teach the
basic fingering positions for most major and minor chords.
You will learn to tune your own instrument and how to read "tab" music.
Students will need to bring their own working guitar.
Class meets on Thursdays from 2:45 until 3:45 in room
110 at Jordan Road School. Design for grades 7 and 8.

TUMBLING
This program is held in cooperation
with Blake’s
Gymnastics. This 8-week program will introduce the student
to both basic and advanced tumbling skills. Starting with
forward rolls up to backhand springs. In addition to this,
we will be working on flexibility, strength and warm up
exercises. This program will be under the direction of
Tracey Blake-Rossell, owner and operator of Blake’s
Gymnastics and Samantha Reese. Maximum number students
per session will be 16. Designed for ages 6-10. Class meets
on Tuesdays.
Session #1 will be held from 3:45 to 4:45
Session #2 will be held from 4:50 to 5:50

SPRINGTIME TENNIS
This six-week program is for students ages nine to thirteen.
The program starts on April 30 and will be held from
3:30 until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Municipal
Tennis Courts at Kern Field. Students will learn the
basics of the game including the different strokes,
how to play matches, and how to score. Classes will
be a mix of tennis drills, team activities, as well
as individual competition. Both sportsmanship and having
fun will be stressed. Instructors Jon Olek and Clay
Smith have played tennis successfully at both the high
school and collegiate level. No experience is necessary
and all skill levels are welcome. Participation is
limited to 20 students. Students will meet on both
days.

SPRING DELUXE TRIP – FRIDAY, MAY

This trip will combine a trip to see both the Masonic Temple
and the new Constitution Center in Philadelphia, and
of course we will also be having lunch. Bus will leave
the Senior Center at 9:30 a.m. for the Masonic Library
and Museum on 1 N. Broad St. Our tour of this facility
will begin at 11:00 a.m. We will then have lunch before
going over to the Constitution Center for a tour of this
National treasure. We plan on being back on the bus by
4:30 for our trip back to Somers Point. Cost includes
Motor Coach Transportation, admission into the Constitution
Center and Lunch. There will be an additional $3 per
person charge for the tour of the Masonic Museum. This
fee will be collected on the bus by the bus captain.

will count against them, how to fill out the many complicated
