SEARCH HELP

Searching the Local Directory:
The results you will see are a listing of categories related to the keyword you searched for as well as a list of Web sites that match your keyword. (See an explanation of Directory below)

The results returned would simply be a listing of Web sites that match your keyword, listed in the order of highest occurrence. In other words, the sites that match your search word the best, will be listed first.

There are two basic methods of search:

1. Simple Word Search

If you have a general subject in mind (like "meetings"), type the word in the Search box and click the "Search" button. The entire collection will be searched for those that mention your word.

2. Advanced Search
If you know exactly what you want, you can get better results by entering very specific information into the Search box. You can use three symbols to better define your search or Boolean operators:

Plus (+)
Use the plus modifier (+) to require that words are found in all of the search results. "July +meetings" returns a listing that must contain both words(include a space between the first word and the + symbol).
Minus (-)

Use the minus modifier (-) before a word to require that it not be found in the search results. "mustang -horse" lists sites containing "mustang" but not "horse" (include a space between the first word and the - symbol).
Double-Quotes (" ")
Enter quotes (" ") around terms to require that the entire phrase be found in the search. "somers point" returns listings where the words "somers" and "point" appear together, either in the title, the URL of the Web site or the document. This can be very useful is narrowing your search.

Or Boolean Operators:
You can include Boolean operators to create your own queries. Boolean operators include AND, AND NOT, OR, and parentheses and must be entered in ALL CAPS with a space before and after the operator.
Enter AND to require that all words are found in all of the search results. For example, to find pages that contain the word computers, the word Internet and the word games, enter computers AND Internet AND games.
Enter AND NOT to require that the word not be found in the search results. For example, to find documents that contain the word Internet but not the word games, enter Internet AND NOT games.
Enter OR to require that search results contain pages with at least one of the words joined by OR. For example, to find pages that contain the word Internet or the word computers, enter Internet OR computers.
Enter parentheses ( ) to group portions of Boolean queries together for more complicated queries. For example, to find documents that contain the word computers and either the word Internet or the word games enter computers AND (Internet OR games).

Directory
What is the Directory? The Directory is a collection of links WITHIN OUR WEB SITE. Each Web site listing includes a description of the site to help you determine if the contents of the site would interest you. You can find what you are looking for in the Directory in two ways:

1. The Hunt
As you click on Directory categories and sub categories, narrowing your search, you will see a trail of categories on the screen designating where you have been and the path you took to get there. The results you will receive as you click through the categories are a listing of subcategories that relate to the category you clicked on as well as a list of Web sites that match the category you selected. You can always find your way back to the beginning by clicking on the BACK BUTTON many times, or find any link that says HOME.

2. Search the Directory
This search is a broader search of the Directory. Use the search field at the top of the SomersPoint-NJ page to search by typing your keyword into the search field. The results you will receive will be similar to the ones produced by the Hunt Method, except the subcategories listed will be from many main categories instead of one single main category.
